Qibla

Written in Damascus in 2015, just before leaving, for the city, its people, and the life folded into its streets.

English translation

Yes - my promises never blossomed

But I planted

On your shoulders

From roses

The most beautiful kiss

And I set my hand free

A soldier of love

Crawling through the pores of your land

By an ant's patient plan

Gathering

From your rolling plain

A share of spring

Keeping it

In hearts that stay true

And when winter comes

For both of us

It builds a qibla

I wrote this poem right before leaving Damascus in 2015, knowing how much I would miss this city and all the memories I made and the people I crossed paths with: university, neighbours, close friends, music school, the food, walking in the tiny streets of old Damascus. I might turn it into a song.
